The 80s designs were visually less impressive. You only have to look at how weak and feeble the Cybermen became in the 80s in Silver Nemesis. Taken out with a sling shot.

Better than having a bitch fight with camp Daleks and then being sucked into the void by the Doctor pulling a big lever.

Or floating up in a balloon to defeat the Cybergodzilla with a ray-gun.

Now, that's just not fair.

It was more like Optimus Prime.

The problem with then new Cybermen is they are "to" Robotic looking. They have lost that look of possibly once being alive and still partly. That's fine with the Daleks as that's the point of them but Cybermen have to still have some organic look/feel to them and the new ones don't.

That's why the 60s, 70's and even early 80's ones worked as they were still faintly organic where as now all you get is a walking "Toaster".
Yeah the Silver Nemesis ones were crap, they looked like they looked a fan production that couldn't find the right gear and scraped together what they could.

The problems always seemed to be with the older ones were the Feet and the Hands which is a shame really as the hands from the new ones are about the only things that actually work/look right/fit. They still haven't managed to get the feet right still with those baking trays, they were probably better of using the Rhino Ajudicators stuff and give all the cybermen New Rock Boots instead (would make historical sense seeing as Invasion cybermen wore DMs).

Actually just thought of something else the new series got right with the Cybermen. Built in weapons. Why if your converting organics into cyborgs would you still have them carry around arms,thatcould be dropped, taken, detroyed etc built in systems would make much more sense. Hell thats how they started off, and the Revenge ones even had built in head/temple weapons.

I still think if the 80s ones had a few minor improvments done to them ,they would still stand out even today .Same with the tenth planet ones .

The new ones are crap though ,too loud and look too much like robots .But at least they did,nt bring back the real ones and fuck them up .

My favourite Cybermen are the ones from "The Invasion" and "Earthshock," and I think these are also the best Cyberman stories. I'm not keen on the "Earthshock" design when it was used in subsequent stories, because the suits became more baggy and less streamlined. The worst Cybermen have got to be the new ones. They look like a cross between the Terminator and Robot Cop, which are all 80s films, so, to begin with, they're already twenty years out of date. Then there's all that camp stomping around, that makes them look like rejects from an old Pet Shop Boys video, again, circa the 1980s. When updating the Cybermen they should have used the design that appeared in “The Invasion” as their kick off point. 60's designs are really in at the moment. Hence the continuing popularity of the Daleks.

I think the Cybermen have looked and acted a bit dodgy since The Invasion, personally. I really don't like the whole "Excellent!" thing of the 80s Cybermen. I don't get the impression that their thought patterns are being processed via logic gates, and on top of that some sort of logical processing.

if( theDoctor == true && evilPlansWorking == true ) {
System.out.say("Excellent!");
ClenchFist();
}

Still, I think Earthshock is a great episode and you could say the same for early ( and late ) Daleks. Still my favorite Cybermen were the Wheel In Space ones, and my favorite Daleks were in Genesis -- which shows them both as cold, calculated killing machines.

I think they looked and acted a bit dodgy before “The Invasion.” None of their plans made the blindest bit of sense, and some of the ones in “The Tenth Planet,” sounded positively flippant. Wink
