I got the impression that he meant both in terms of quality (which I suspect Chris Eccleston had felt back in 2005 when he quit....) and in terms of overall viewing audience figures....plus revenue from sales....

I think overseas sales were dropping off or not going up whatever......while the associated spinoff shows may not have done as well as hoped.....certainly BBC don't now seem anywhere near as "Keen" on pushing it as they used to be....

I still suspect their is a faction within the BBC that really hates the Programme....the Public asked for it back...they thus ensure they split the public right down the middle by giving it to a halfwit like RTD....knowing he simply just did not have the talent to keep it going for long....thus then enabling them to duly "kill it off again" within a few years....R.I.P.

Perhaps "Primeval", "life on Mars", "Spooks", etc stole some of the glory too....in the end it seems as if BBC regard it as very much "The Poisoned Chalice".....

My own view is the show just needs to recapture it's Dignity and Imagination.....IF it was played more seriously, that is "Playing to it's unique strengths"......
....rather than trying to be "So Trendy"...."So Cool" so "Happening Now" (yawn !) and just "Aimed at BBC's idea of Yoof".......
.....it would not be any "Poisoned Chalice" at all....just a much loved fantasy sci fi aspect adventure series for EVERYONE to enjoy.....

IF it has become a "Poisoned Chalice".....then the BBC has quite intentionally made it into one...

Quite. If only New Who did play to "the unique strengths" of the show's concept it might be good.

Only up to the Pirate Planet so some catching up to do. Documentary on the Williams era on the first disk was first class and very interesting. Ribos was better than i remembered but I'm more looking forward to the Stones of Blood after reading about its lesbian undertones recently. I obviously missed these as a kid Smile

I missed any lesbian undertones 3-4 months ago. Over-intellectualisation, IMO.

A couple of Professional females appear to be living together...thus "Lesbianism" MUST automatically now be assumed....in our sex obsessed society...of course ! - They might have simply been sharing a house for the convenience of their work...or have been professional associates of course....
...as also the two women in "Gridlock" COULD have very easily been two elderly sisters....but don't forget that would not fit in with our society's current obsession with sex ....especially Gay sex....!

I thought Regnant T Diaper invented homosexuality in Queer as Folk, and tribadism in Love and Monsters.

Oh come on, Valium. Any dolt can see that Stones of Blood is an orgy of Sapphic lust. Romana quite clearly spends most of this story waving around a space-age strap-on that she discovered in one of the Doctor's secret cupboards in the Tardis. Key to Time detector? I don't think so.

There are more lesbian undertones than them living together if you read Fact of Fiction in last month's DWM

Well there you have it. That well-known paragon of intellectual discourse, Doctor Who Magazine says so. Ergo, verus est.

This was a wonderful release. One of my very favourite seasons, given a first-class treatment on DVD. Bravo.
