I'm curious to know the opinions of those less adverse to 'popular' music have on this band.

Personally, I love them, especially during the Richey days - they were very much a cult band pre-1996, which might elevate them from 'pop' status. They have intelligent lyrics and bandmembers alike, a sense of rythm and beat, politics etc. All in all, a class act.

I was aware of the manics from early on; I never really got interested in their work, thought it was a bit samey and over-hyped by the press. </opinion>

They've always been pretty popular, though, Mike. They were on TOTP a few times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hMqpR9AogI

Although, they really took off after Everything Must Go - which I don't really like. Laughing

Lyrically, I think they are one of the best bands I've listened to. But I don't know, you just can't go through life thinking like Richey. He was mentally ill - I mean who the fuck would carve "4 REAL" into their arm? He spent ALL HIS TIME reading so his lyrics are pretty great. I don't understand a lot of them, I must admit, but they are the reason I now know what 'pyrrhic' means. Laughing

I think a lot of his views are influenced by the fact he was severely depressed, anorexic and, I think, an alcoholic ( google that to confirm ). Bundled with the fact he was obviously reading some pretty bleak stuff.

I am idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn
Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards
Self-disgust is self-obsession honey and I do as I please
A morality obedient, only to the cleansed repented

He takes a dim view on anything. Take pornography - which he hated - he takes the view that it is men abusing women. Well, yes, perhaps on a fundamental level it is but the woman still consents. Richey just took it all to the extreme. Yes there are massive problems with the world and huge injustices but what's the point of getting angry to the point where you can't live in it anymore? I suppose I'm just too shallow. Laughing

Though there is no true love,
Just a finely tuned jealousy

Take this line. Is this line true to you? I imagine it holds true depending on what relationships you've had or how you think. Personally, I think there is some truth in it but it doesn't represent the whole picture and is just another example or Richey taking the bleakest view possible.

I think the thing I respect about him most is his dedication. He obviously spent most of his time reading and trying to better himself which is reflected in the quality of his lyrics.

Still, I do really enjoy listening to them but sometimes they are just a bit too intense for me now. I guess, I've just learnt to accept how things are. Twisted Evil Laughing

Great reply!

Oh yeah, Richey was pretty damned ill by the time he fucked off - some of the stuff he said makes sense but it has to be combined and compared with other opinions to actually form a true outlook on life; his viewpoint was tainted by his depression.

As for the latter lyric, the girl I'm falling for doesn't believe in romantic love. Which is a little unfortunate. She quotes Richey: "Love is an impossible concept." Her view would probably change if she experienced it herself but it worries me, in terms of her wellbeing, not of the chance of a relationship with her, which personally right now I think is a bit too intense a prospect for her to handle. I worry about her pretty much all the time.

Doesn't take a genius to see what I'm getting at. Crying or Very sad

Although you probably didn't want a reply off me, I'm giving you one anyway. Laughing

Nah I was hoping for a fully fledged discussion from both sides, so it was more than welcome. Smile

I've become pretty damned cynical over recent months - but not to Richey's extent. I just don't see the world with the same rose-tinted glasses I always used to when one of my exes told me I had a zest for life.

Mate, I'll be honest with you. People tend say such that kind of crap when they don't want to be tied down or get emotionally involved.

Consequently, it may be a mildy cryptic signal for you to back off a bit. Women are fairly intuitive when it comes to recognising who is falling for them.

She doesn't just say it to me, though, she says it as a rule for herself - I was speaking to her best friend a few days ago and even she's confused and worried by it. It's hard to get across without actually speaking to her yourself, to be honest, but with her current mindset, I seriously doubt that's what it is. She's so depressed and ill right now that I don't think she'd focus any energy into realising who was in love with her.

I've understood for a while now that I probably don't have a chance with her, so I'm just putting all my energy into making her as happy as possible and sticking by her.

I absolutely get what you mean, though. Smile

Not necessarily. When I was 17/18 I thought it was just 'cool' to act like Richey. Laughing

Laughing She's teetotal!

In all honesty, I have really strong feelings for her, like - and as clich├ęd as it sounds - I just can't stop thinking about her or worrying about her, I always feel like an arse when I talk to her in case I fuck up and annoy her. You know the score.
