It's true, ain't it? Every story arc that Rusty and Muffit have produced are the sort of stuff that a 12-year old fan would produce. Everything Rusty has done-the feitishisation of the Doctor, the whole "Time War between Time Lords and Daleks, the Daleks meeting Cybermen, the idea of Sarah Jane defeating every alien menace and of course, Torchwood- it's just fanwank, ain't it?

Do you agree?

Yes, it is.

I didn't really see much fanwank in the Eccleston season-just Daleks appearing and Time Lord mentions, and blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos for UNIT
and a Cyberman.

It really started in earnest around the time of AOG/DD, though. Daleks
vs. Cybermen was superficially entertaining, but still fanwank of a huge
kind. And the fanwank snowballed from there.

Yes, it's fanwank. Our favourite programme is in the hands of complete wankers.

Sometimes it works though but other times it doesn't. For example, the bit with Derek's master was great. Fan wank defiantly but god it was a good punch in the air moment. Alas that feel good factor quickly vanished.

Spinoff media is the same. Big Finish's Key 2 time arc is the biggest peace of fan wank I ever had the misfortune to sit through outside of new who. Yet other stories pandering to fan desires like spare parts or I Davros work extremely well.

I think its purely a matter of moderation. Doing an idea that fans want but doing it in a manner everyone can enjoy.

The thing is, in the Doctor Who Universe, it's not inconceivable that the Daleks and Cybermen wouldn't engage at some point. But, it most certainly wouldn't be on earth, it wouldn't be anything major because the Daleks are simply more powerful, and the Doctor is unlikely to be around.

It's making the Doctor the center of everything that pisses me off. He's a wanderer that happens to be a hero, not someone with a "fate".

For that reason Spare Parts pisses me off as much as NuWho. Yes, it's well written and performed, and yes there obviously was a Genesis of the Cybermen at some point, but it's a chance in a million that the Doctor was there. David Banks already did a perfectly good Doctorless Cyberman history.

Actually prof, it's stated the doctor deliberately went there out of grief for Adric (I think in episode 3). He only played dumb to stop Nyssa from interfering.
