An exclusive interview in today's Nottingham Evening Post confirms that Smudger is on the side of football righteousness and names Troughton as his favourite Doctor:

Matt Smith: a man.

I'm definitely going to send him a Forest shirt with "11" on the back!

I'm perfectly happy with the character being referred to as Doctor Who and it being spelled "Dr".

I always call the character "the Doctor" when speaking with fellow fans, but when talking about the series to family or friends I usually just say "Doctor Who", I know it's wrong but it doesn't annoy me.

Good job this wasn't reported by The Guardian - Rani would probably be taking them to Court for Slander by now otherwise! Very Happy Very Happy

I wouldn't worry about that, Rob.

The Doctor's team are at home to Rani's Middlesborough on Tuesday night.

We couldn't beat a team of Oaks right now let alone Tricky Trees. Never actually heard this nickname before B

Mind you Rob probably thinks this was a major press release.

It's better than the Reds. I do like the much older nickname the Garibaldi Reds:

Yeah, I do the same. The way I see it, the characters in the Whoniverse refer to him as the "Doctor",* but everyone in the real world calls him
"Doctor Who".

*Except in the War Machines. I was amused to read about Levine having
a hissy fit over TWM, so if I ever meet him I'll keep calling his favourite
hero "Doctor Who". Razz

It's been kind of referred to before though, hasn't it? In Pat Troughton's time, he's signed notes to his companions as 'Doctor W', and even used the monicker 'Doctor Von Wer', which means 'Doctor Who'. Even Theta Sigma refers to it- Theta looks like an 'o' with an 'h' through it, and Sigma looks like a 'w' onits' side. Writing out Theta Sigma and rotating in through 90 degrees, you'll get something that looks like 'Who'.

The Radio Times always used to call the character "Doctor Who" in their listings and articles, and for almost 20 years the credits at the end of every episode used it too, so it's at least semi-official.

No one whose minds WOTAN read knew the Doctor's real name, so it was really saying "Doctor who?".

Yes, although the 'Doctor W' and 'Doktor von Wer' (Doktor von Werner in the Target) are hard to explain, WOTAN's phrasing can be seen as similar to 'DOCTOR ? IS REQUIRED' or 'DOCTOR %s IS REQUIRED'.

The line through the lower case theta (and the upper case letter H) is called a zygon!
