I think its the way the NCP's interact with you in real time and the way the narration is all in real time rather than cut scenes which makes both Half Lifes so fucking good.

That's a big part of it - about 2/3. The rest top notch character A.I., building tension at all the right moments, evocative environments and setpieces, and the Gravity Gun Very Happy

Without a doubt.

I like the environmental puzzles you get in both Half Lifes too and also the water physics in Half Life 2 is groundbreakingly amazing.

Never played Dawn of War but I think it's made by Relic who make Company of Heroes. I think the gameplay is pretty similiar. If that's the case then that really is a great game. Very Happy You should check out COH - it's really, really good. Best RTS i've ever played. Online anyway, single player isn't that great.

Neverwinter is unplayably awful; KotOR is overrated junk, overshadowed by the infinitely better-written sequel, and Dragon Age is yet more Biowhoring.

VtM:B is good, though; you might like Planescape Torment.

I really liked Neverwinter, the sequal now that was completely unplayable, Sith Lords goes deeper but with the amount of missing bits in it and dull storyline repeat of the first.

Played planescape and Icewind dale and the Bauldur's games, they are good its just not to my liking. I'm not a DnD fan.

PC:
Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate I and II
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Day of the Tentacle
Outcast
Morrowind
Doom

Console:
Chrono Trigger
Psychonauts
Metal Gear Solid series
Streets of Rage II
Alien Soldier
Sonic 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Super Puzzle Fighter
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (but not Warrior Within or Two Thrones)
Vagrant Story
Dragon Quest series
Final Fantasy XII
Azure Dreams

Indie:
Sunset over Imdahl (rpgmaker)
The Way (rpgmaker)
Battle for Wesnoth
Mugen

I like PC games, but have rarely had a computer powerful enough to be a hardcore PC gamer. I've never been that into FPSs. I don't own any consoles of the current generation yet and am not that desperate to buy one.

Video game music has always been a (slightly guilty) pleasure of mine. Many of the games in my list are almost there for the soundtrack alone. Streets of Rage II's is one of my favourites.
