Halloween is a masterpiece.

I agree Don't Look Now and Psycho are massively overrated, though. Most "Best Films" list usually are, mostly.

I have never particularly seen the point of audition and the ring. There is far superior Japanese cinema out there. Ah well, it's all subjective I guess.

Any recommendations?

Ok, bearing in mind that appreciation of films is a completely subjective matter, heres a few things that I personaly appreciate in the large area of Japanese and oriental cinema!!

The yokai monster trilogy (the 60s version rather than the Miike remake, which I regard as wank) - A trilogy of films with weird monsters, I would watch them in order as the third one tends to be a bit pantomine, but if you like the first 2 you will probably want to see the third as well.

Kwaidan - visual poetry.

Onibaba- slow moving minimalist cinema. If you dont like minimalism, you wont like this film.

Jigoku - the 1960 version, not the remake.

Black magic (Shaw brothers) - a good quality Shaw brothers outing

Human skin lanterns - Not a purely horror film, but worth a look in if you like Shaw brothers films

Do you like category 3 stuff? If you dont know, this is a catch all rating in Hong kong that means awash in sex and violence. These films tend to be grimy, upsetting and exploitative. If thats your thing (I like a bit of it sometimes)

Bunman - the untold story - a grimy canibalism flick featuring anthony Wong
Red to kill - exploitative to the exteme, quite an uncomfortable little flick
Horrible high heels - weird and almost incomprehensible film about a factory that makes shoes out of human skin, far from a good film, but has a few jaw dropping moments of what the fuck.

-Also worth a look in

Bio zombie - low budget zombie mayhem, a kind of quirky homage to George Romero's dawn of the dead

Ichi the killer - Try and find the uncut version, the R2 has a lot missing and its worth the extra effort, byt eh director of audtion. I actualy think audition is one of his weakest films. Visitor Q, the guys from paradise, and many others are better.

Mr vampire - high quality kung fu, witchcraft and vampire show downs. A must see.

Encounters of the spooky kind - despite the lame title an amazingly good film with some graphic scenes of supposed taoist sorcery Razz

Cant be arsed to type anymore. Have a look on bittorrent for the goods and let me know if you like anything you find.

Good call.

A bit different, but i'd also recommend Three Extremes. And, not Japanese, but i'd also recommend the original Pang Bros version of The Eye.

Ichi the Killer is far superior to Audition, it's one of the funniest films ever made, Kakihara is hilarious

I still think "The Ring" is fairly sublime though, definitely deserves to be on the list.

I love chainsaw massacre too, I just wish it had been called "Isolation", as originally intended - I think it would be far more acclaimed if it didn't have such a shit title. That film is fucking gorgeous, lovely sound design, beautifully shot, thick atmosphere etc etc. The little throwaway shots like that one of the spider's eggs hatching all build up into a tissue of subconscious, primal creepiness.

This may outrage some of you, but I visited a gallery in America once and the original print of the movie was about ten metres away from Van Gogh's sunflowers Laughing

also where is silence of the lambs? or is that a thriller

Three extremes? I have not seen that one. The trailer looks good on youtube. I think this must have come out just after I gave up on hunting down copies of the 500 or so films miike seemingly released every year. Too much time spent stalking around chinatown and ebay looking for the goods, lol.

Oh also, I forgot to include any guinea pig films in that list. im a big fan of devil woman doctor, its a pretty cool film, and flowers of flesh and blood is perfect to watch with a girl on the first date. Impresses every time. Which reminds me of the time a particular young lady was staying around my house and said 'lets watch a film. I just put the first thing next to the DVD player on, which happened to be blood sucking freaks. It was a good thing she had a sense of humour and liked gore Laughing
