Just when you thought the media couldn't get any more saturated with voice-over artiste Stephen "the stupid person's idea of a clever person" Fry, comes this gem in today's Guardian. A few pages on from an article on the art of writing parody is a stupidly gushing review of Fry's autobiography by piss-poor Charles Dickens impersonator Simon Callow. It begins thus:

"Each section of this cunningly constructed causerie of a second autobiographical volume is headed with a word or words beginning with the letter C. One word is conscipuously missing from the catalogue of Cs"

There is indeed a word beginning with C missing. And it's not "cleverness" as Callow assumes. It's CUNT.

Beyond parody and beyond comprehension.

Insurance salesman and "brainiest man in the world according to readers of Radio Times" Stephen Fry, who yesterday successfully used an adjective to widespread acclaim.

As critical as I often am of Fry, I've never thought that always used put down against him is quite accurate, Fry's a lot of things, but he's hardly stupid. I'd say its more like he's a clever person that sells out to stupid people. With his comparing Jade Goody to Princess Diana or fawning over Alan Davies poor man's Merton routine or that hideous bit in his new book where he goes off on a Rustian rant about snobs who don't like reality television.

On the other hand, his sketches in A Bit Of Fry & Laurie are often sublime, and display a brilliant comic mind way beyond the abilities of writing spoof letters to Esther fucking Rantzen Willie Donaldson.

A friend of mine once openly declared him to be a genius and wouldn't hear otherwise.

We're no longer friends.

I like QI and Jeeves and Wooster, but Fry is definitely the stupid persons idea of clever. Reading out a few cards with information collected from Wikipedia by BBC researchers does not make you the cleverest man alive.

I think its a very good definition of QI, but not of him (see reasons why above). If he still came up with comedy as good as Saturday Night Fry, I doubt as many people would be saying that

Still, he doesn't. He lazily reads out cards in a quiz that's a cross between facts on the back of a pack of Swan Vestas and that Peter Cook sketch where he says the whale is an insect and lives on bananas. So Mr Fry, you've only got yourself to blame.

But I think that that's exactly what 'the stupid person's idea of a clever person' means.

He's certainly not unintelligent, he's very clever at making people laugh, but he's hardly the new Einstein that certain sectors of the population believe him to be and treat everything that comes out of his mouth as gospel.

Really? And this from the same cunt who quite openly uses racist terms on television such as "pikey."

For the record -yet again- I agree that Fry is (should that be "was"?) a decent light entertainer and comedy actor, but to hold him up as some sort of unassailable polymath is the height of stupidity and deserves to be ridiculed.

I'm sure there are more successful people in this country than a comedian turned faux-egghead.

To his credit, he is the 2nd most successful member of Fry and Laurie.

There's one person more deserving of the title "the stupid person's idea of a clever person"

(no, not Paxman)
