I hope this is the right place to bring this up. Watching HLN news, I was struck by the recent uproar about Vince Vaughn's upcoming movie using "gay" to describe a car in a derogatory manner. It reminded me of how I was taken aback when Rose told the Ninth Doctor, "You're so gay", in Aliens of London--doubly so because the line was written by an openly gay man. Were there any eyebrows raised at the time over this?

It was RTD's lame attempt to "get in with the youth vernacular of today" and it came across as being pathetic.

Oh, that was absolutely horrible! It boggles my mind how he manages to get away with half the things he says.

I don't like aspects of "yoof" culture leaking into television programmes, but I think that one line is nothing compared with the fact that the storyline was total bollocks and a very badly disguised satire on the Iraq war. Satire does have a place in Doctor Who, but only when intelligently written.

The Americans are still quite homophobic, so and references to gays will kick up a stink over there while not even raising an eyebrow over here.

To me, it was a needless and pointless anachronism, and evidential of RTD's need to flag up homosexuality every five minutes. Which wasn't a case of him making tv or Britain more tolerant, but of him saying "look at me, I'm flamboyantly gay".

Now fair enough, Barry Letts let his Buddhist beliefs become part of the show, but they were used to inform the Green Death and Planet of the Spiders to create thoughtful, intelligent stories. RTD just shoehorned his in without thought or care, adding nothing to the intelligence, reasoning or morals of his stories.

Seems odd of RTD to have a viewpoint heroine like Rose to use the
term "gay" in a degrogatory manner, without getting called out about it
during the story. Question

Davies' excuse was that it was "exactly what Rose would have said."

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I'm glad I could bring up the subject while it was on my mind and not get shot down if I'd posted it at a certain other forum.

I thought she meant he was gay as in a sensitive man, literally gay etc, because he said the slap hurt. I didn't interpret it as "gay" in the chris moyles passive homophobia sense

for the record people should stop saying "that shit is gay" or whatever, it's as unacceptable as saying "you're such a jew" to a tightwad. People say the meaning has changed over time, it hasn't, we just live in fairly homophobic society

But people just won't have it, they're determined to keep using the word in that way. It's like people who go on and on about how it's soooo unfair that black people can say "nigger", but white people can't Confused I find it fucking exhausting... such a tediously transparent outlet for their half-suppressed racism

Generally middle class middle aged americans, and young working class brits are the main offenders

I agree completely with this.

Rose is after all a real, independent person. Not a character created and imagined entirely by RTD as I so foolishly imagined.
